FJMU students win grand quiz contest

LAHORE: Students of the Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Lahore, (FJMC) won the grand quiz competition arranged by the Alzheimer`s Pakistan.

The Alzheimer`s Pakistan had arranged the quiz programme in September to create awareness among students and young doctors about healthy lifestyle that could reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer`s disease.

According to a press release, students and doctors of 12 medical colleges from all over the country par-ticipated in the grand quiz.

Among the participants colleges were Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore; Khyber Medical College, Peshawar; Fatima Jinnah Medical College,Lahore;IslamicInternational Medical College, Rawalpindi; Central Park Medical Colleges, Lahore; Foundation University Medical College, Islamabad; Army Medical College, Rawalpindi; Sharif Medical and Dental College, Lahore; Rehman Medical College, Peshawar; Rashid Latif Medical College, Lahore; Lahore Medical & Dental College and Shalamar Medical & Dental College, Lahore.

In the first phase of the quiz, anawareness campaign was run in each of the participating medical colleges and students were registered for the quiz. A preliminary quiz was held in all respective medical colleges between Sept 14 and 17.

Top five students from each institution were selected on the basis of the preliminary quiz. These students participated in the grand quiz Finale on Wednesday.

The final showed a close competition with Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Lahore, winning the quiz and ArmyMedicalCollege Rawalpindi, taking the runner-up position.

Addressing the ceremony, Alzheimer`s Pakistan patron DrYasmin Raashid said there were around one million PWD in Pakistan but this figure would rise sharply in future.

She called on all stakeholders to develop programmes to raise awareness and improve access to early diagnosis and care.

Alzheimer`s Pakistan president Zia Rizvi said the quiz had helped in creating awareness among future doctors about the growing problem.

He said it also highlighted the importance of supporting people with dementia and their handlers, and also encouraged healthy lifestyle changes which might reduce the risk of dementia.
