Police rescue five anglers from Panjnad headworks

BAHAWALPUR: Ahmedpur East police rescued five marooned anglers from Panjnad Headworks near Uch Sharif, some 70 kilometres from here, on Sunday night.

According to a police press release, Emergency 15 helpline of Ahmedpur East police received a call from a man identifying himself as Tayyab Husain who said that he, along with four others, were trapped in the middle of Panjnad headworks where water was shallow and needed to be rescued.

ASP Mehroze Ali Ghauri, who was monitoring the helpline, rushed to the scene heading a police contingent. The police located the trapped men using a private boat and rescued them.

The ASP on Monday told the media that the five men identified as Ashfaq Ali, Muhammad Asghar, Muhammad Asif, Javed and Tayyab Hussain told him that they had come to the headworks for angling from Jhang Road, Faisalabad.

They hired a private boat that dropped them on the location they had chosen for the purpose. According to the arrangement, the boatman had to return in the evening to pick them but he failed to do so.

According to the anglers, because of opening of the headworks` spillways in the night, the waters began rising, making them worried about their safety.

Sensing the looming danger, they contacted the police emergency in Ahmedpur East and related their predicament.

They said that they were thankful to police for rescuing them.

Regional Police Of ficer (RPO) Muhammad Idreas Ahmed, has praised the Ahmedpur East/Uch Sharif police for timely rescuing the marooned anglers. Correspondent
