Dangerous buildings to be vacated

RAWALPINDI: The concerned authorities were on Wednesday asked to get dangerous buildings vacated and to lodge cases against their owners to avoid any untoward incident.

Deputy Commissioner Talat Mehmood Gondal also directed that repair work should be started on dilapidated buildings owned by the government.

He gave these directions during a meeting at the deputy commissioner`s office. The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Arif Raheem and officials from other departments.

The deputy commissioner took notice of the building department not compiling data of dangerous buildings in the district and directed concerned officers to present him with a report on the compilation of data every day. The final report should be submitted in a week, he added.

According to a senior official of the local administration, the meeting was told that 470 buildings in the district were declared dangerous and that a list of who owned them was being made.

As many as 153 buildings in Rawal Town were declared dangerous, 69 of which are in dilapidated condition. However, no action has been taken to vacate them.

According to a survey conducted a few weeks ago, 59 schools in the district were found to be in dangerous condition and the education department pulled down 19 of them recently, on which reconstruction work as started.

Mr Gondal directed the concerned authorities to start giving notices to the owners to vacate dangerous buildings in a month and if they fail to do so, cases should be registered against them.
