KP legislators

IN times of economic difficulties, it is reprehensible to note that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa legislators are planning to visit the United Kingdom in July to study law-making process (May 29).

The aim of the visit is to broaden lawmakers` vision and knowledge of how parliament works in the UK, mother of democracy, but ostensibly this looks more like a pleasure-cum-shopping trip.

The 20-odd members lined up for two-week jaunt should know that both the British and Scottish parliaments remain in summer recess in July and seldom is any MP available for deliberations.

Perhaps, it is not out of place to mention here that the Pakistan cricket team would also be in the UK at that time and possibly be playing a Test match at Lord`s in July.

Given that KP is governed by the PTI whose chairman is a former Test cricketer, the timing of the visit, one must say, is very canny. As Dawn`s report has rightly pointed out, how could the legislators broaden their vision when the assembly has already completed three parliamentary years and passed over 100 bills.

While the PTI chief is criticising Islamabad for wasteful projects, he should also look at how his KP legislators are frittering away taxpayers` money on fruitless foreign trips.
