Education called panacea for all social ills

PESHAWAR: Speakers at a ceremony here on Tuesday declared a proper education system panacea for all kinds of social, economic and political ills and said it paved way for a pluralisticandjustsociety.

The ceremony was organised by the Baacha Khan Trust Educational Foundation (BKTEF) to honour brilliant students of the Baacha Khan Schools here, where the Awami National Party leaders, academics, teachers and parents were in attendance.

The students had performed well in the matriculation examination of various KP boards of intermediate and secondary education.

Twenty-four of them from eight schools were given commendation certificates.

A student from Malakand`s Totakan village, Haseeba Younas, moved participants by telling them how her teachers from a government school used to force her into running errands for them.

She said she compelled her parents to enrol her in the Baacha Khan School, where she found parental care and proper guidance.

BKTEF director Dr Khadim Hussain said around 6,000 studied in 15 Baacha Schools in Chitral, Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Karak, Dir, Swat, Kohat, Thall, Hangu and Landi Kotal. He said the Baacha Schools students were taught social responsibility, humanism and the art to question.

`When the Baacha Khan Schools were launched in 2007, I was not that confident but the excellent performance of our students proved that sincere work pay,` he said.

Noted scholar and ANP leader Bashir Khan Matta, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said Bacha Khan was an inspiring personality, who had envisioned a pluralistic and just society and advocated equal rights for women.

He said Bacha Khan foresaw education as a permanent solution to all problems and wanted to spread his message of nonviolence through education.

Student Shehla Parveen from Chitral`s Garam Chasma area said she used to study at a government school in her village before going to the Baacha Khan School, where she learnt own mother tongue, Khowar, good manners, tolerance andrespectofothers.

ANP leader Bushra Gohar praised Baacha Schools for introducing the best model of education in the province and said the model should be adopted by the public sector schools.

Another speaker, Jameela Gilani, said the provision of quality education to the people should be the top priority for progress and development.

She said the Baacha Khan Schools students were confident and responsible and that she was hopeful that they become useful citizens.
