Pakistan again calls for probe...

2015-01-03
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has renewed its demand for investigation into the killing of two of its paramilitary troops on the Working Boundary by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and said that the incident had damaged the bilateral mechanisms for peace on the tense Line of Control (LoC) and Working Boundary (WB).

Adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz has written a letter to his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj conveying the protest ofthe Pakistan government over the Rangers` killing and callingfor a probe and punishment for the BSF soldiers involved in the incident.

The letter, handed over to Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad, Mr TCA Raghavan, by Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry, on Friday emphasised that the incident had `undermined mechanisms established by the two countries to ensure peace and tranquillity along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary`.

The Rangers` soldiers called for a flag meeting by the Indian local commander on Wednesday were killed by the BSF firing.

The existing bilateral mechanisms relating to the LoC and WB include a hotline between directors general of military operations (DGMOs) and flag meetings of local commanders. Both sides in the past had expressed satisfaction over the role of these mechanisms in defusing the situation on the LoC and WB and had called for revitalising them.

Foreign Secretary Chaudhary, while handing over Mr Aziz`s letter to High Commissioner Raghavan, underlined that `the incident was not only in contravention of the rules of engagement, but also amounted to breach of trust of Pakistani soldiers in these mechanisms`.

Mr Chaudhry rejected Indian allegations that Pakistan was aiding infiltration attempts and said that ratcheting up tensions on the LoC and WB was not in Pakistan`s interest particularly at a time when its security forces were fighting Taliban and other terrorists within the country.

On Wednesday, Indian deputy high commissioner was summoned to the Foreign Office for receiving the protest.

The demarche given to the deputy high commissioner had asked theGovernment of India `to investigate the incident, bring perpetrators to justice, and ensure maintenance of peace and tranquillity along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary`.

Meanwhile, the foreign secretary also briefed the Heads of the Missions of P-5countries and the EU in Islamabad and emphasised the importance of maintainingceaseBreontheLOCand WB.

He stressed the urgency of the international community playing its role in counselling India to refrain from actions that threaten peace and stability in the region.
