Public school in rented building for 40 years

RAHIM YAR KHAN: The Government Boys Elementary School, Businessman Colony (English medium), has been functional in a rented building for the last40yearsinfrontofthe nursery ground.

According to the record, when the school started in 1977 in the six-marla building, there were only two rooms and a toilet for 57 students. Later, one more room and two toilets were added to the school.

Now, the strength of the school is 275. Several students have to sit on the lawns and in the corridor of the building.

A senior teacher of the school told Dawn the monthly rent of the build-ing was Rs40,000 whereas school`sannualnon-salary budget was Rs400,000.

The school administration could not construct more rooms and toilets on the private rented land.

He said they had written to the authorities about the provision of land and the last letter was written on Nov 18, 2015, to the executive district officer.

There are 12 teachers, including two women teachers.

District Officer of Education (elementary) Chaudhry Muhammad Aslam said the issue of the rented building was not in his knowledge. He said he would write to the authorities for the shifting of the school to some government building and he would try his best to get state land for the school.
