LAHORE: Pakistan Bar Council and the Supreme Court Bar Association on Saturday decided to conditionally support establishment of military courts owing to extraordinary circumstances in the country.

`The circumstances compelled us to help government fight against the terrorists who had been killing our children,` said PBC Vice Chairman Burhan Moazzam Malik.

He was talking to the media persons after a joint meeting of PBC and SCBA held at Supreme Court`s Lahore registry.

However, he said, the bars sought from the government draft of the proposed legislation for future discourse. He said the legal fraternity wanted to know whether the legislation was against the fundamental rights of the citizens.

Mr Malik said the bars would challenge the new law before the Supreme Court if found contrary to the Constitution. He said the bars strongly condemned Peshawar incident and demanded maximum punishment for the perpetrators.

He also announced that an `All Pakistan Lawyers` Convention` would be convened to scrutinise the proposed amendment in the Constitution for the establishment of military courts.
