Two die of Congo fever BANNU, Nov 4: Congo fever has killed a man and his son and affected several others in Bannu district.

Amandi Welfare Society`s press secretary Sakhi Badshah told mediapersons here on Monday that Mohammad Nabi of Amandi Piran bought an ox for his son`s marriage.

`But the ox fell ill and was slaughtered,` he said, adding those who slaughtered or ate the meat suffered from Congo fever.

Nabi and his son, Laig Shah, were rushed to DHQ hospital, Bannu from where they were referred to Peshawar in critical condition.

`But Laiq breathed his lost on the way on Sunday while Nabi died at the hospital on Monday,` said Mr Badshah.

Local people said another son and daughter of Nabi among several others were admitted to hospital in Bannu.

However, Nabi`s second son was referred to Islamabad in critical condition.-Correspondent 100 power thieves arrested PESHAWAR, Nov 4: Raiding teams of Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) accompanied by police personnel on Monday arrested 100 people for using illegal connections in different localities of the provincial metropolis.

A statement issued here said that Pesco`s special magistrate also recovered Rs1.8 million from the defaulters. Cases against the accused persons were registered at the relevant police stations.

The statement asked people to stop illegal use of power due to which the company suffered huge financial and line losses and its distribution system got overloaded, resulting in excessive loadshedding.

It said that the drive against illegal use of electricity and direct hooks would continue in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.Bureau Report Water shortage in Mansehra MANSEHRA, Nov 4: The prolonged and unscheduled power outages have affected drinking water supply in the Mansehra city and its suburbs, creating difficulties for the residents.

Mansehra and its adjoining areas have been witnessing suspension of electricity of more than 12 hours a day as a result of which water supply schemes could not be operated.

`We have been affected badly by the frequent suspension of electricity by Pesco for the last many weeks. We have taken up the issue with officers of the company but to no avail, said Mohammad Asif, a leader of local traders` body.

He said that prolonged and unscheduled power outage had also affected business activities.

He demanded of the government to immediately address the issue of prolonged outage in Mansehra.-Correspondent Polio workers without salary KHAR, Nov 4: Polio vaccinators have threatened to boycott polio campaigns over nonpayment of salaries for last four months.

Talking to reporters here on Monday, representatives of polio vaccinators, Mian Inamullah Khan, Ikram Khan, Sajad Khan and others, said they were facing starvation because of being unpaid for last four months.

They said total 16 workers had been working with the local health department as transit vaccinators for the last four years but they had not been paid their salaries on time.

They also criticised the health department`s senior officials and WHO for ignoring their problems.

They said their salaries had also been reduced to Rs7,500 from Rs10,000 but they had been working with enthusiasm to protect children from permanent disabilities.

They said local health authorities assured them of paying salaries before Eidul Azha but failed to do so. They demanded of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor to take notice of the issue.-Correspondent Additional rooms in schools KARAK, Nov 4: The district education officer Umer Khan Kundi has said that additional rooms would be constructed in schools to provide better facilities to students and staff.

He was chairing a meeting of the sub-divisional education officers and assistant education officers in his office here on Monday.

He urged the officers to bring change in the schooling system and improve the monitoring system to ensure better education facilities to students.

He warned that disciplinary action would be initiated against those teachers who were found absent from their duty.

Mr Kundi said that the teachers should not make frequent visits of the offices and focus on their basic jobs. He assured the teachers of resolving their problems on priority basis.-Correspondent Journalist grieved PESHAWAR, Nov 4: Grandmother of Yousaf Ali, general secretary of the Peshawar Press Club and reporter of an English daily, passed away in Mardan district on Monday evening.

Her Namaz-i-Janaza will be offered today (Tuesday) at 2pm in her native Takhtbhai area on the Malakand Road.

The deceased was mother of Dr Abdul Ali, Professor Abdul Haleem, Dr Abdul Hadi, Mohammad Idrees and Engineer Abdur Rahman.

She was also the grandmother of Dr Mohammad Hussain of the Lady Reading Hospital.-Bureau Report
