Mirza group councillors threaten protest on water issue

BADIN: Councillors belonging to the Badinbased group headed by former home minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza on Sunday threatened to launch a protest campaign against the Pakistan Peoples Pany (PPP) government for its moves to block flows of irrigation water into various channels of the district.

Speaking at a press conference in the local press club, Shahid Afridi, Ghulam Hussain Soomro, Essa Mallah and other members of the Badin Municipal Committee said the group was prepanng to move the Sindh High Coud against `illegal construction` of the Alipur regulator over Phulelli Canal near Matli town to control flows to water channels of Badin district.

They alleged that water being supplied through Akram Wah (irrigation channel) was being divened to the lands owned by cedain PPP leaders.

The councillors also demanded an inquiry into utilisation of the funds recently released for the repair and rehabilitation of Alipur regulator and cedain water channels. They also called for a probe into contamination of drinking water as was stated in the recently disclosed findings of the judicial commission set up by the Supreme Coud.

The councillor said that if their demands were not met, thousands of Badin people would launch a vigorous movement under the leadership of Dr Zulfikar Mirza and his spouse Dr Fehmida Mirza.
