Reimagining education`

2015-08-06
APROPOS Faisal Bari`s article `Reimagining education` (July 31). It should serve as a wake-up call to look into the affairs of the young generation with regard to education.

Our education system overloads children with unnecessary subject knowledge, whereas we need to work on giving our children the ability to think for themselves.Time has come for us to realise the fact that every profession is respectable and one must be proud of one`s profession and not feel less than others. Every individual has a role to play in the country`s development.

The dignity of labour should be instilled in the minds of children when they start their education.

We are fortunate that our culture is rich in its values, the work ethic is appreciated and honoured, and there is a value for interpersonal relations. Children are told from the beginning to respect their elders and taught how to behave and inter-act in society.

Education must cultivate critical thinking in children. They must have the curiosity to judge everything critically. The onus lies on educators, parents and the elders to guide and instruct them.
