Govt urged to declare Lakki calamity-hit

PESHAWAR: A group of students of the University of Peshawar belonging to Lakki Marwat district has expressed concern over the extensive damage caused by the recent noods and demanded of the government to declare the district as calamity-hit area.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, Fawad Saifullah Marwat said that the traditional politicians of Lakki Marwat had kept the district intentionally backward, while the common people had no option, but to follow them.

He said that in 2013 general elections the people got an opportunity to elect a new candidate and voted for the Palcistan Tehreek-i-Insaf nominee on the National Assembly seat, but he too failed to deliver despite passage of two years.

Flanked by other student leaders, including Nisar Ahmed Khan, Akhtar Zaman Marwat, Hashmatullah, Farhatullah and Pir Adnan, Mr Saifullah said that the slogan of `change` raised by PTI chairman Imran Khan was attractive and Marwat people supported his party candidate, but the provincial government could not come up to the expectations of people.

The MNA, he said, had failed to initiate any development scheme for the welfare of people. He said that the recent torrential rains and flash floods had further ruined the infrastructure and properties, including livestock, and caused displacement of people from the low-lying areas.

Mr Saifullah said that despite the large-scale destruction the PTI-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government did not take appropriate steps for relief and rehabilitation of the poor people. He demanded of the government to announce a comprehensive development package for the flood-hit areas of Lakki Marwat district.

In Lakki Marwat, the Pakistan Army distributed ration among the flood-hit residents of the district on Wednesday.

At a function held at the government girl`s high school Saeedkhel in Lakl(i city, Lt-Col Mohammad Basit Siddique gave food packages to the affected people.

Assistant commissioner Sher Alam Khan was also present on the occasion. The Pakistan Army has donated its one day ration for the flood-stricken people across the country.

Similar functions were also held in other localities for distribution of ration.

Col Basit assured the affected people that all-out efforts would be made for their rehabilitation. He said that they would stand by the floodand rain-hit people in the time of distress and would continue aid and relief activities in the district.
