Teachers` status

2016-10-06
THE World Teachers Day was observed on Oct 5. This year the day marked the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO recommendation concerning the status of teachers.

This year`s theme was `Valuing Teachers, Improving their Satus`. Teachers are the only source of providing a better education which means better life worldwide.

It was estimated that 3.2m more teachers would be needed in 2030 to gain universal primary education; and 5.1m more for the purpose to achieve universal lower secondary education.

On Oct 5 different events were organised in various countries. These events included celebrations to honour teachers, in general, or those who had made such special contribution to a particular community.

The day was marked to underscore the importance of teachers and learning Over 100 countries celebrated World Teachers Day. Undoubtedly, teachers are the builder of any nation.

Today 1.4 million teachers are missing in classroom due to which nearly 250 million children remain deprived of the basic skills of reading and writing.

The international communities and governments need to stand united to support teachers and quality learning skills worldwide especially in those countries where the number of out-of-school children is high.

A message should be spread that teachers are the key. According to a Japanese proverb, `Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.

There`s truth in those words, as anyone who has ever had a great teacher will know.
