Five dry port ex-staffers booked for graft

FAISALABAD: Five former officials of the Faisalabad Dry Port, including general manager, have been booked on charges of embezzling more than R s25.3 million.

Chak Jhumra police registered the case under Section 408 of PPC against Nasar Hayat, general manager, Naveed Imran, manager (operation), Rana Nasarullah, deputy manager, Tariq Saeed, import officer, and Farhan Ali, manager (IT), on the complaint of Amer Majeed, dry port GM(administration).

The complainant said Nasar along with others allegedly embezzled more than Rs 25.3m by tampering with the record.

He alleged that the suspects had committed fraud in different segments, including import services invoices, import containers rent invoices, import freight charges, transport bills, board meeting fees and labour contract income.

He said Nasar had quit his job in 2015 to hide his corruption and resumed it after some months. Majeed saidthe misappropriation was unearthed the same year through audit.

Following the audit, Nasar had fired four suspects and arranged another audit in 2016 from a private firm.

The company also pointed out embezzlement and tampering with record.

The entire record was examined through Irfan, manager (audit), and Ibrar Husain, accounts manager, and it surfaced that the suspects had committed fraud during 2010-15. Suspect Farhan was sacked in 2012; however, he remained in contact with other suspects and kept them providing with bar codes and computer codes.

The complainant alleged that Nasar had also embezzled a car, a laptop and a cell phone provided to him by the dry port to perform his official duty.

Madina Town SP Malik Jameel Zafar said investigation into the issue was launched with no arrest so far. He said both sides would be heard to ensure justice.
