FARMERS: All seven elected bodies of the farmers` organisations of Bhaghat sub-division of the Gogera branch canal in a meeting condemned the irrigation department`s decision to start some construction at its main headworks for which the canal would be closed for onemonth from Thursday.

The meeting, held at Khikha canal rest house on Wednesday, was presided over by Dabanwala distributary chairman and elderly farmers` leader Chaudhry Fateh Muhammad.

Through a resolution, the participants said when the sowing of wheat, canOla and fodder crops was to be done in the coming months, the canal had been closed that meant farmers would not be able to sow their crops.

Earlier, under a rotation programme of canals closure, this canal closed in January but now when farmers direly needed to irrigate their farmlands, the decision of closure of canal would affect farmers.

The meeting demanded that their assembly members contact Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to get the decision withdrawn to save the growers from losses.

The meeting was also addressed by Khikha distributary Chairman ChaudhryFaqirMuhammad, Hamza distributary Chairman Muhammad Latif, Rajana distributary chairman Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmad, Jakkar distributary chairman Muhammad Ashraf, Bhon distributary chairman Mian Manzoorul Haq and Pirmahal distributary chairman Mehr Shahid Hiraj.-Correspondent
