PA demands judicial inquiry into Panama leaks

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Wednesday demanded of the federal government through a joint resolution to conduct judicial inquiry into Panama leaks as family of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was also involved in it.

`A big scandal in the shape of Panama leaks has been surfaced in which family of the prime minister is involved,` said Mohammad Ali Shah while moving the resolution.

Mr Shah, who is parliamentary leader of PPP, said that all political parties had been demanding investigation into the Panama leaks. `Therefore, this august house demands of the federal government to conduct judicial inquiry into the scandal, he added Through the resolution, the assembly also demanded of the federal government to frame terms of reference for the inquiry with the consultation of the opposition parties.

Besides the mover, the resolution was also signed by Senior Minister Sikandar Khan Sherpao and PTI lawmaker Shaukat Ali Yousafzai. The resolution was passed by majority, when Speaker Asad Qaiser, who was chairing the session, put it for vote.

The members of PML-N opposed the resolution while lawmakers of ANP and JUI-F abstained from the voting.

Speaking on a point of order, ANP parliamentary leader Sardar Hussain Babak said that the inquiry should not be restricted only to Panama leaks rather its scope should be extended to all offshore companies.

Earlier, the assembly continued debate on west-ern route of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project for the second consecutive day.

The lawmakers from the treasury and opposition benches came down hard on the federal government for not including western route in CPEC.

The angry lawmakers said that they could resign from the assembly to fight for the rights of the province. `People lose trust in the state, if it does not do justice with them,` said Zareen Gul of IUI-F.

He said that every federating unit had its share in CPEC and it was responsibility of federal government to give due share to all provinces. `Let us resign en bloc from this house as its four resolutions are not honoured by the federal government,` he said.

Meraj Humayun of QWP said that federal government ignored Khyber Pakhtunl(hwa in all mega schemes. She said that federal government was creating hurdles in the development of the province.

Adviser to Chief Minister Shah Mohammad Wazir said that the original map of CPEC was changed by the PML-N government.

`According to the actual map designed during the previous government, it was planned that CPEC would pass through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,` he said.

He said that coming generations would not forgive them if share of the province in CPEC was not snatched from the federal government.

Sahibzada Sanaullah of PPP said that it would be injustice with the people if they remained silent over the critical issue. He also criticised provincial government for its failure to get rights from the federal government.

He said that treasury and opposition benches should march towards Islamabad for the rights of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Spokesperson for provincial government Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani, Senior Minister Sikandar Sherpao, Sardar Aurangzeb Nalotha of PML-N, Minister for Public Health Engineering Shah Farman and Sardar Hussain Babak of ANP participated in the debate on CPEC.

The chair adjourned the session till Friday.
