Students stop staff from entering Kohat varsity

KOHAT: The students of Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) on Wednesday stopped the staff from entering the campus, pressing the administration to start summer semester and provide pick and drop transport facility to them.

The students, who have been boycotting their classesfor thelast three days, also uprooted the main gate and set up a protest campthere.

However, they postponed their strike till Thursday on the request of chief minister`s adviser MPA Amjid Afridi, who held talks with the acting vice-chancellor and asked him to accept the demand of starting the summer semester.

After coming out of the office of the VC, Mr Afridi told the students that the acting VC had said that there was no summer semester in any of the universities and if they had any such proof they should bring it to him tomorrow (Thursday). Sources said that the adviser also discussed the transport issue during the meeting.

President of All Students` Federation of Kohat district, Nadeem Saifullah, told Dawn on phone that they had gathered theproofs that summer semester was being conducted in all the universities and the facility was being availed by the students of cadet college, Kohat, medical university and other private institutions.

Mr Saifullah also demanded that the university students should be provided a transport facility. He warned that if their demands were not accepted they would stage a sitin in front of acting VC`s office. He also urged the chancellor, governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan, to immediately appoint a permanent VC in KUST so that problems of the students could be resolved on priority.

GRENADE ATTACK: A minor girl was killed and three other family members were injured in a grenade attack on a house in Mohammadzai on Hangu road onWednesday, police said.

Unknown men hurled a grenade into the house of Zar Mohammad which exploded in the compound in the wee hours of Wednesday. As a result, minor Shah Mala died on the spot, while Zar Mohammad, his wife and daughter were taken to the KDA hospital.

The cantonment police have registered a case against unidentified terrorists on the complaint of Zar Mohammad.

Meanwhile, the police arrested two men wanted in murder cases and as many illegal Afghan refugees from the area around Garrison College here on Wednesday.

During house-to-house search, the police arrested Syed Ahmed and Syed Anwar and allegedly recovered two pistols, one rifle and hashish from the hideout.Wednesday, police said.
