Education concern`

2017-07-07
THIS is apropos the article `Education concern` (June 19).

Another aspect which needs to be looked at, is that of private schools sharing faculty, especially at the `O`/ A` level Is there a paucity of qualified teachers? Secondly, are these teachers underpaid, making it necessary for them to teach at other schools, besides enticing students for private coaching in the evening? I had the good fortune of studying at a missionary school in my formative years, and I still remember there was no concept of private tuition in the evening. In fact, weak students were detained after school hours for additional coaching, all free of any charges.

Thirdly, one can`t grasp the level of output ofthese teachers, running around all day, teaching at more than one so-called branded school, and giving coaching classes in the evening as well. How much physical and mental workloads can a person take? And how much justice are they doing to education? It reminds one of the law of diminishing returns.

Yes, our education system is not only churning out dross, but also producing children with stunted growth. This is especially trueforthose private schools that are located in bungalows having no play area. Students are crammed in dingy classrooms, some under a staircase while some classrooms have been improvised on the rooftop with the help of tin/asbestos sheets, hazardousforhealth.
