Close race in U.S. election

2014-11-07
WASHINGTON: All indications point to a very close contest between President Roosevelt and Mrs. Dewey in the first war-time election since 1864 and most of the poll results are expected to be so close that backers refuse to predict the election of any candidate. All poll results show that President Roosevelt is running below his 1940 vote.

Studies of the 1940 presidential election show that a loss of 2 per cent of the vote in certain places would give a number of vital States with large electoral votes to Mr. Dewey. Backers of these polls point out that the margin in many large States seems so small that either candidate could win by a landslide in the electoral college if he carried allthose States.

A very unusual situation is shown in most polls that Mr. Dewey has a chance to win in many of the so-called `Border States` Kentucky, Oklahoma, Maryland, Missouri, West Virginia which border on the solid south and which no Republication presidential candidate has ever won without sweeping the entire nation. Registration figures show that out of upwards of 45,000,000 who go to the poll on Tuesday, the majority will be women. (Dawn, Delhi)
