CPEC trucks drive through Lakki under tight security

LAKKI MARWAT: Chinese trucks loaded with goods of the first trade activity under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project drove through the Lakki Marwat district here on Sunday.

In this connection the local police had made foolproof security arrangements on the Indus Highway which connects Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the other three provinces. `Over 300 policemen along with traffic wardens were deployed along the highway to provide security to the passing Chinese trucks, said an of ficial.

He said the activity continued for two days and the convoy of nearly 100 trucks drove through the district peacefully. DPO Khalid Hamdani visited the route and checked security arrangements. He appreciated the cops on duty and announced cash rewards forthem.

The corridor project became operational with the first trade activity connecting China`s Xinjiang province with rest of the world through the Gwadar port. The convoy of trucks will continue journey under tight security to its destination.

Meanwhile, the posting of non-local policemen and young police officials as station house officers in police stations across the district has helped bring down crime rate. An of ficial told Dawn on Sunday that ef fective actions had been launched against anti-social elements in thedistrict, adding maintenance of peace, tightening of noose around criminals and eliminating the dens of narcotics sellers were the challenging tasks before the district police chief Syed Khalid Hamdani when he took over charge of of fice a few months ago. From the first day the new police chief started efforts to bridge the gap between police and people as he thought it the best solution to curbing crime, the official maintained.

He said the reconstitution of dispute resolution council and reactivation of police assistance lines had provided quick facilitation to area people to get their problems and petty disputes resolved. The police official said the district police chief closely interacted with elders and local people that helped him eliminate hideouts of criminals.

GAME COMPETITIONS: The zonal game competitions under the annual district government high and higher secondary school tournament ended here on Sunday.

The district sports committee`s information secretary Fareedullah told journalists that the body headed by DEO Haziqur Rehman supervised thesportsactivities.

He said the high and higher secondary schools had been divided into four zones, including Lakki, Naurang, Ahmadzai and Ghaznikhel.
