Sacked factory workers protest

By Our Staff Reporter 2015-12-07
KARACHI: Around 80 workers of a garment factory held a demonstration in front of the Karachi Press Club on Sunday and demanded action against the factory owners for sacking them without giving a proper reason.

The factory, Denim Clothing Company in the Korangi Industrial Area Korangi, prepares garments for the international brand, H&M, said the workers.

The general secretary of the National Trade Union Federation, Nasir Mansoor, said that most of the workers had not received an employment letter at the time of their induction in the factory, which made it easier for the owners to boot them out.

The protesters though shouted slogans against the factory owners, they could not describe the reason behind the sackings and it remained unclear what exactly forced the owners to take such a step.

A protester said that five workers were sacked on Nov 26 on verbal orders. After a few days, another batch of workers was sacked. The factory owners were not available for comment.
