Escaped prisoner among two `militants` killed in encounter

KARACHI: The police on Saturday evening claimed to have killed two alleged militants belonging to the banned Tehreelei-Taliban Pakistan in an `encounter` in the militancy-infested area of Sohrab Goth, officials said.

They added that the police acting on a tip-off conducted a targeted raid in the area behind the new Sabzimandi off the Superhighway, where an encounter ensued in which two suspected militants were killed, said Malir SSP Rao Anwar.

He identified one of the deceased as Shahzad Ali, a TTP member. He had been arrested in Charsadda in murder and other cases and sent to the Dera Ismail Khan prison from where he escaped along with 174 other inmates, including 35 `high-profile militants` on July 30 in 2013 when dozens of heavily-armed Taliban insurgents attacked the facility.

At least nine people, including four policemen and five militants, had been killed in the attack and the following the shootout.

SSP Anwar said that after the escape from the jail, Shahzad Ali shifted to Karachi. He was however arrested by the Mominabad police in Orangi Town in a contraband case. But released he from jail here and was allegedly planning a terror act when on secret information the police raided the spot and killed him in the encounter along with his accomplice, whose identity could not be ascertained immediately, the police officer added.

Two other suspected militants managed to escape, said SHO of the Superhighway Industrial police station Rana Haseeb Ahmed .

The police claimed to have seized two pistols from their possession.
