Row over medical college recruitment re-emerges

SUKKUR: A controversy over recruitment of 22 faculty members for the Ghulam Mohammed Mahar Medical College (GMMMC), Sukkur, re-emerged on Tuesday in the absence of its Vice Chancellor Asghar Channa, who has proceeded to the United States.

The recruitment was challenged by a faculty member, Dr Rafiq Memon, in the Sindh High Court and the matter is pending adjudication in its Sukkur bench.On Tuesday, acting chairman of the GMMMC syndicate Asadullah Mahar fixed a meeting for Wednesday (July 9) which prompted immediate reaction from a group of teachers led by Dr Memon, who raised question about Mr Mahar`s authority to call or chair a syndicate meeting and vowed to seek SHC intervention.

Dr Memon citing the Universities Ordinance, 2002, said in his statement that an acting chairman of could not call or chair a syndicate meeting.

He apprehended the the purpose of the meetingcould be to legalise the recruitment already pending adjudication.

Protest over `kidnapping` of youth by police Members of the Phulpoto communitylivingin Sangrar town near Rohri held a protest demonstration outside the Sukkur press club on Tuesday over `kidnapping of a youth by the area police blackmailing his family for two months`.

Ghulam Nabi, Ghulam Mohammed, Mohammed Khan and others who were leading the protest told themedia that that the Sangrar police had picked up Sajjad Phulpoto two months ago and shifted him to an unknown place.

They alleged that the SHO concerned was demanding a heavy amount to set him free and not disclosing the place the youth had been kept.

They further alleged that the SHO was threatening to implicate him in fake cases or even kill him in a staged encounter if the money was not paid to him.

They urged the authoritiesconcernedtohelplocate and release the youth.
