Minister warns of stopping power supply to Punjab

Bureau Report 2014-01-09
PESHAWAR: Remarks of Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali about electricity theft in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stirred commotion in the provincial assembly on Wednesday.

Provincial information minister Shah Farman flaying the remarks warned that the provincial government would suspend electric supply to Punjab if Wapda stopped electricity to Bannu district.`If electric supply is stopped to Bannu from the national grid, then the provincial government will suspend power supply to the entire Punjab,` he said while speaking on a point of order in the House.

The minister said irresponsible statements of the state minister could harm national unity.

He also used un-parliamentary language against the state minister creating uproar in the House.

Lawmakers of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz protested the use of `offensive` language by ShahFarman against Abid Sher Ali.

Deputy Speaker Imtiaz Shahid, who was chairing the session, ordered the expunging of un-parliamentary words from the record.

The uproar disrupted routine business of the House as questions about different departments were kept pending.

Earlier in the day, the state minister told a news conference in Peshawar that Wapda would cut off electric supply to Bannu district over excessive power theft.

He also accused ministers andMPAs of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf of encouraging consumers against paying power bills.

After question-answer hour, Senior Minister Sirajul Haq tabled the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Right to Public Services Ordinance, 2013, Provincial Ombudsman Annual Report, 2012 and the six months report about implementation of National Finance Commission Award in the assembly.

The session was later adjourned until 3pm Friday.
