CSOs urged to work against gender discrimination

TIMERGARA: Speakers at a function here on Tuesday urged civil society organisations to work against gender discrimination to ensure the women`s participation in development and decisionmaking process.

The event was arranged by the education department in Balambat in collaboration with Khewendo Kor, a non-governmental organisation, to mark the World Literacy Day.

Lower Dir district nazim Rasool Khan, naib nazim Abdul Rashid, deputy commissioner Irfanullah Wazir, district education of ficer Dr H afiz Mohammad Ibrahim, Timergara tehsil nazim Mohammad Riaz, deputy DEO Mohammad Riaz and Khewendo Kor regional manager Ibrash Pasha addressed the function attended by government school heads, staff members of DEO office, and notables of the area.

Schoolchildren from different parts of the district delivered speeches and sang songs to highlight the importance of education.

The speakers said every child had the right to education and that it was the responsibility of parents, society and the state to provide equal opportunities of education to children beyond their sex, race and social status.

They said under the Constitution, girls had the same rights as boys and therefore, they should be provided with equal opportunities to get education.

The speakers said the government had been providing free textbool(s and other facilities to students of government schools to facilitate them.

They said illiteracy was the basic cause of poverty, overpopulation, militancy and drug abuse.

The speakers said civil society organisations, media, ulema, teachers and parents should get together to bring all out-of-school children to educational institutions. The deputy commissioner and district nazim later distributed schoolbags and books among the students. Correspondent
