UET convocation highlights importance of engineering

LAHORE: The engineering sector has considerable potential to optimise the future of Pakistan.

Under this perspective, engineering education can be helpful in attaining development goals, Governor/Chancellor Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana said at the 23rd convocation of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) on Tuesday.

`There must be something exclusive for the students` career and character building amid shaping their talent on modern grounds, the governor added. In this connection, he said, the government had started many projects to engage engineers.

UET Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid highlighted the output of the university in several sectors.

He said more than 45,000 UET graduates were providing services to national and international setups. In the convocation, more than 2,400 degrees were conferred 14 PhD, 125 MPhil, 618 MS/MSc/ MBA executive, 1,663 BSc engineering and 22 BSc architecture.

The main campus, Kala Shah Kaku campus, Faisalabad campus, Rachna College of Engineering and Technology, Gujranwala and Narowal campus received 2,071, 134, 78, 114, and 45 degrees. Up to 61 gold medals were distributed among 43 students.

BDS RESULTS: Girls clinched the top three positions in the first 2016 professional BDS annual examination of the University ofHealth Sciences (UHS).

A total of 784 candidates from 13 affiliated dental colleges sat the examination out of which 539 passed and 243 failed, showing a pass percentage of 68.93.

Ayesha Sohail of De`Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore, got the first position by securing 605 marks.

Maryam Aslam of Dental Section, Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad, and Amna Khalid of Akhtar Saeed Medical and DentalCollege, Lahore, grabbed second and third positions by securing 593 and 589 marks, respectively.

BDS first professional supplementary exams will commence from Dec 30, said a UHS spokesman.

OLD RAVIANS ELECTION: The election for the new executive committee of the Old Ravians Union is going to be held on Nov 27.

The election committee, headed by the former Sessions Judge Abdus Salam Khawar,announced the election schedule on Tuesday.

GCU History Department former chairperson Prof Dr Farhat Mehmood and union`s Honorary Secretary Prof Dr Khalid Manzoor Butt also attended the meeting.

According to the election schedule, nomination papers can be obtained from Nov 14 to Nov 15 while final list of the candidates would be displayed on Nov 18. The polling will be held on Nov 27 on the university campus.
