PPP demands to keep Lowari Tunnel open all through week

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan People`s Party, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Thursday complained about the snapping of road links between Chitral to other parts of the country and demanded the immediate opening of the Lowari Tunnel all through the week to ease the misery of commuters.

It also demanded disbursement of compensation to the families of the people who died in rain and snow-related incidents.

The demands were made during a meeting chaired by PPP provincial president Humayun Khan here.

Noted among participants were PPP leaders including Rahim Dad Khan, Abdullah Yousafzai, Abdul Qudoos Khan, Gauhar Inqilabi, Naeem Khan, Umar Farooq Khan, Malik Jahan Akbar, Zahoor Khan and Ijaz Khan.

The PPP provincial president said the delay in the completion of Lowari Tunnel was causing f atal accidents but the government was indifferent to it.

He said the government should open the tunnel to ensure smooth movement of the people from and to Chitral.

Mr. Humayun said the last PPP government had approved 18th Constitutional Amendment and enabled provinces to have control over own resources but the present federal and provincial governments didn`t take tangible steps for the people`s welfare. He also complained about poor law and order situation and demanded corrective measures.

The participants examined preparations for the party`s re-organisation in the province and decided that more attention would be given to the process.

They said there was no room for groupings in the party and that after the naming of the party`s provincial cabinet, all groups had buried the hatchet in the party`s larger interests. The participants also condemned a `terrorist attack` on PPP Punjab leader Shaukat Basra and demanded the immediate arrest and trialof attackers.

The meeting was told that PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would arrive in Islamabad on Feb 15 and had planned to interview candidates for various party positions in KP divisions and districts.
