Slain teacher`s children seek govt support

Bureau Report 2016-11-10
PESHAWAR: Criticising the government and Ele ction Commission of Pakistan for their failure to compensate family of a female teacher who had died after she was hit by a stray bullet while returning from election duty in 2015, her young daughter Benish Imtiaz said here on Wednesday that her mother was the lone bread earner of her family and the relevant officials are least bothered to support the victim`s children.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club, Ms Benish said that her mother, Shabana Shaheen, a BPS-14 schoolteacher at a government school, was returning from her duty as assistant presiding officer at Gulshan Rahman Colony, Kohat Road, during the local government elections that she fell on the road at Ganj Chowk, Peshawar.

`We took her to the Lady Reading Hospital where doctors said she had received a bullet of AK-47 rifle on her head. Due to lack of required facilities we shifted her to Northwest Hospital, Hayatabad, where she succumbed to her wounds,` Ms Benish said.

Flanked by her brothers, Zuhaib Hassan and Shehzad Khuram, Ms Benish said that the relevant officials of the provincial government, elementary education department and election commission had assured the victim`s family of paying full compensation under the `Shuhda package`, but failed to fulfil the promise till now.

Mr Hassan and Mr Khuram also said that they had repeatedly visited the offices of the relevant officials in the education department, ECP and Peshawar deputy commissioner, but none of them extended any support.

They said that their mother had served education department for 19 years as teacher.

`We once again appeal to Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and ECP to order payment of compensation to us under Shuhada package,` they said.
