Ministry to respond to plea on petrol ST

By Our Staff Reporter 2016-11-10
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court gave on Tuesday a last opportunity to the ministry for finance to file a reply about levy of sales tax on petroleum products.

Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed has challenged the levy of the sales tax for being unlawfully imposed.

Petitioner`s Counsel Sheraz Zaka argued the imposition of sales tax on petroleum products could not take place without the approval of federal cabinet and parliament.

He said recently the Supreme Court had decided that any notification issued by the federal government would be required an approval from the cabinet.

He said the imposition of sales tax on petroleum products was a violation of fundamental rights and an exploitative practice.

Justice Ayesha A Malik allowed a request by a federal law officer and gave a last opportunity to the finance ministry to submit its reply on the matter.

Hearing was postponed till Dec1.
