HSC commerce results announced

KARACHI: `There is no concept of rote learning in commerce studies,` said Aisha Abdul Khalique while replying to a reporter`s question at the results announcing ceremony for Higher Secondary Certificate Part-II Commerce regular and private students at the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK)here onThursday.

`My college is great. I didn`t need to take any tuitions or coaching for any of my subjects.

And mind you, my college is KMA Girls Degree College in Lyari, Aisha, who stood second in the regular group with 926 of a total 1,100 marks and a percentage of 84.18.

Thanks to the Rangers operation there, the gang wars are a thing of the past and peace-loving folks like us have chance to breathe easy, added the girl hoping to do BBA now, also from a Lyari university.Meanwhile, Iqra Hanif, a student of Institute of Business Education, who stood first in the regular group with 930 marks and an 84.55 percentage also said that she took no tuitions. `I paid attention in class and did my homework regularly and that`s it,` she said.

Maha Lakhani also from Institute of Business Education, who bagged the third position with 924 marks and a percentageof 84, said that she didn`t need any extra help either since her teachers at the college were always available in class for any guidance unlike the `absentee teachers of government colleges`.

The commerce regular group saw a total of 39,316 candidates registering while 38,784 appeared for the exams. A total of 15,532 students passed making the passing percentage 40.05. Of them 80 per cent and above (morethan 880 candidates) got the `A-1` grade, 70 to 79.99pc (770 to 879) got `A` grade, 60 to 69.99pc (660 to 769) got `B`, 50 to 59.99pc (550 to 659) got `C`, 40 to 49.99pc (440 to 549) got `D` and 33 to 39.99pc (363 to 439) got `E` while 33pc (less than 363) failed.

The top three private students were Sania Khan (843 marks and a percentage of 76.64), Maisam Haider Ali (827 marl(s and a percentage of 75.18) and RoomanaAziz (820 marks and a percentage of 74.55). Of them the second position holder was asked how come a boy appeared for his intermediate examinations privately.

`I am also a scout and I got badly injured while performing my scouting duties. For a while I couldn`t attend regular college so studying privately suited me better,` said Maisam Haider.

The commerce private group saw a total of 8,169 candidatesregistering while 7,712 appeared for the exams. A total of 1,829 students passed making the passing percentage 23.72.

BIEK to have reception block BIEK chairman Mohammad Akhtar Ghori said that despite having a committed staff at the board, he felt that the students could not fully avail their services whenever the need for this arises.

`We are, therefore, introducing a reception block with as many as 12 counters for public dealing and proper sitting areas along with a parking block,` he said.

Also for the convenience of students the BIEK is about to start a call centre that will make it easier to get information while sitting at home. `We would also be issuing computerised certificates. And the examination, enrolment forms, etc, will be uploaded on our website for the candidates to print out or fill on-line,` he said.

For the top position holders the chairman announced Rs50,000, Rs30,000 and Rs20,000, respectively.
