Main suspect in brothers` murder arrested

RAWALPINDI: One of the four policemen who allegedly shot dead two brothers five days ago was arrested in Peshawar and brought to the garrison city, the police said here on Thursday.

A senior police of ficer told Dawn that two of the policemen Mohammad Sharif and Mohammad Zaheer were arrested on Sunday and the third, Altaf Zubair, surrendered himself to the police on Monday. However, the main accused, Mohammad Umair, had gone into hiding along with his official weapon which he allegedly used to shoot the two men.

He said a special police team on a tip-offarrested Umair from the house of his friend in Peshawar. The suspect will be produced before a local court for obtaining his physical remand on Friday, he added.

Zeeshan Butt, 23, and his brother Shakeel Butt, 25, worked as butchers in Sadiqabad. On Saturday night, they were returning home located at Dhoke Ali Akbar on a motorcycle when the four personnel of the Muhafiz Squad signaled them to stop at a checkpost near 6th Road. When the two men did not stop, the policemen chased and killed them near the Government Degree College for Women in the limits of the New Town police.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan visited the house of the victims on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said police officials had no justification to open fire on the two brothers. He said those involved in the incident would not escape the punishment.

Talking to the mother of the deceased, Mr Sharif said justice would be provided to her at all costs. The chief minister also announced Rs3 million for the heirs of the two brothers.
