Schools and exercise

2016-10-12
WE all know that physical and mental exercise is vital for the growth of children.

Sadly, I see more heavy schoolbags than cricl(et bats and footballs in the hands of our students.

This has led to lack of physical exercise in the early stages of life which results in children being physically weal<. School teachers and managements argue that school hours are from morning till noon. But what they do not realise or neglect is that children usually have a heavy homework and strict routine on weekdays. Owing to this, students cannot spend time in physical activity.

In addition, some students have their homes in areas where there is no park or playground. This forces them to play on roads, which is dangerous. On the other hand, even when students have sports, they usually have less than an hour to play and usually only a single period for play in a week.

School managements argue that students should be more focused on studies than sports. But it is a fact that physical weakness results in lack of confidence and focus on studies.

I request the authorities concerned and school managements to instruct schools to have a balance in studies and sports.
