Universities can`t run on vacant offices: GCU staff body

LAHORE: The Academic Staff Association (ASA) of the Government College University (GCU) has said universities do not run on vacant offices, and despite the severe crisis, GCU has made no regular appointment on any key positions without the approval of the chancellor.

`Only`lookafter`charge was given to senior most faculty members of the longvacant offices of deans with-out prejudice till the regular appointment for which summary was forwarded to the competent authority last month,` a press release quoted ASA General Secretary Dr Nouman Aftab as telling the media after a meeting of the ASA Executive Committee on Wednesday.

He said Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah inherited a `dean-less GCU` with ad hoc registrar, treasurer and controllerof examinations, while most of the academic departments were also headed by adhocin-charges.

Dr Af tab said the VC was against ad hocism, but he accorded priority to academic and research positions and forwarded a summary for regular appointment of deans of Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Arts and Languages last month to the competent authority for theapproval.

He also said summaries to assign the charge of registrar and controller examinations to senior most officials concerned was also pending with the competent authority for approval.

The association through a resolution requested the governor and higher education department to speeduptheprocessofapprovalsof requests made by the university.
