Wapda, donors discuss hydro projects

LAHORE: The Wapda authorities and international donors and financial institutions on Friday pledged speedy execution of various hydropower projects such as Keyal Khwar and Dasu.

Various issues came up under discussion at three meetings of the Water and Power Development Authority authorities with delegations of KfW of Germany, World Bank and the State Bank of Pakistan.

Wapda chairman retired Lt-Gen Muzammil Hussain discussed with the donors the matters related to financial arrangements for various under-construction as well as future projects at these meetings held at Wapda House.

At a meeting with the German delegation, led by Dr Henning Plate, Head of German Ministry for Cooperation and Development Division for Pakistan and Afghanistan, he said Wapda valued the support of international financial institutions anddonor agencies particularly the KfW of Germany for implementation of the projects in vital sectors of water and hydropower in Pakistan.

In addition to other issues, scope for four projects being funded by KfW and institutional arrangement was also discussed at the meeting.

Germany is providing financial support for Keyal Khwar Hydropower Project, Harpo Hydropower Project, Warsak Dam Rehabilitation Project and Glacial Monitoring Project.

At another meeting with DrDemetriosPapathanasiou, World Bank`s Practice Manager for Energy and Extractives South Asia Region, the progress on two mega hydropower projects funded by the World Bank namely 1410 MW-Tarbela 4th Extension and 2160 MW-First Stage of Dasu were discussed in detail.

DELEGATION: A delegation comprising State Bank of Pakistan Deputy Governor Saeed Ahmad, Meezan Bank President Irfan Siddiqui and Al Baraka Bank President Shafgaat Ahmad also called on the Wapda chairman.
