PML-N intra-party election faces delay

Bureau Report 2016-11-12
PESHAWAR: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has once again delayed its intra-party elections due to multiple issues, a source said.

The party had appointed unopposed Nawaz Sharif as its central president on Oct 18, 2016 and announced to reorganise all the provincial units on Oct 29, but it could not materialise.

The source said that the reorganisation process in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was expected in November, but the provincial leaders were not informed about the new schedule so far.

`We have almost completed arrangements by contacting our provincial council members to ensure their participation in the reorganisation of the party,` a senior leader of the party told Dawn.

However, when contacted PML-N Peshawar district president Abdul Sattar Khalil said that the party was facing many problems and it had delayed the intra-party elections for about two months.

Mr Khalil said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was scheduled to visit Peshawar on Oct 29, but he delayed his visit due to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf`s protest rallies in Islamabad. He said that Panama leaks case in the Supreme Court was a fresh matter which had forced the leadership to focus its attention on the issue. `We are in fact waiting for the PM`s visit to Peshawar so that he could announce names of new of fice-bearers in the province,` he said.

The leaguer criticised the PTI-led provincial government for its failure to initiate development schemes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said that the provincial government was supposed to focus on uplift of the people instead of spending public funds on protest rallies.

`Our candidates would emerge successful with a big margin in the 2018 general elections,` he claimed.
