Ageel retains BB tennis title

ISLAMABAD: Top-ranked Ageel Khan on Sunday retained the men`s singles title when he outclassed Shahzad Khan 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed International Tennis Championship while Ushna Suhail won the ladies singles final beating Mahin Aftab 7-6(7-4), 6-3 here at Islamabad Tennis Complex.

Ageel built up a winning lead 2-0 by breaking the first game of Shahzad and kept the same pressure throughout the set, playing forehand as well as backhand drives and finally succeeded to win the set 6-2 by breaking fifth game of his opponent. He kept his supremacy intact in the second set too.

In the decider, the champion player become more aggressive as he did not allow his opponent to settle down throughout the match, exhibiting quality game. He got a cash prize of Rs100,000 along with a glittering trophy while Shahzad as runner up received a prize money Rs55,000 along with a trophy.Earlier, Ushna clinched the ladies singles title. In the first set Mahin took the winning lead 3-0 by breaking second game of Ushna and then she changed the strategy and started consistent game from the base line and levelled the score 3-3 all by breaking fif th game of Mahin.

The score went up to 6-6al1 as both the players held their respective serve and Ushna won the tie break at 7-4 by playing intelligently at crucial stages.

Ushna played strongly in the second setand won the set 6-3 by breaking seventh game of Mahin. The match lasted one hour and 45 minutes with the winner getting Rs42,000 prize money while runner-up Mahin pocketed Rs26,000.

Abdal Haider won the title of U-18 singles beating Aman Attique 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in a thriller while Mohammad Shoaib overcome Hamza Bin Rehan in the U-14 final 6-2, 7.5.

Earlier, in men`s doubles final, pair of Muhammad Abid and Usman Rafique defeated Shahzad Khan and Yasir Khan 7-5 7-6.
