PESHAWAR: Unidentified assailants gunned down a traffic police sub-inspector in the limits of Yakatoot police station here on Thursday.

This was the second incident of targeted killing since May 5 where a police official has been targeted in the provincial capital.

A Yakatoot police station official told Dawn that the incident took place at around 7:00am when the sub-inspector was on his way to duty from home. The official identified the policeman as Aftab Khan, a resident of Yakatoot.

The incident took place near Rehman Baba graveyard where unknown attackers riding a motorcycle opened fire on Mr Khan, killing him on the spot. The assailants escaped after the attack.

Funeral prayers for the slain official were offered at Malik Saad Shaheed Police Lines, Peshawar, and attended by senior police officers. The counter terrorism department registered an FIR and has started investigations.

Earlier on May 5, another policeman was gunned down in the limits of Phandu police station. The killing was later claimed by banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.
