Girls school reopens in Bara after six years

As many 686 girls students from kindergarten to intermediate level started attending their regular classes as the institution was reopened after about six years. The school was closed down in September 2009.

Samia Zeb, the principal of the school, told journalists at the make-shift building of the institution that the main building of theschool was blown up by militants fewyears ago after which educational activities were continued at a rented building in Sarband area of Peshawar district near Bara.

She said that although the number of girl students had shrunk after they were shifted to Sarband owing to insecurity and threats from militants, yet now most of the old students along with new ones rejoined the institution `Currently we are taking our classes in the hostel building, which remained intact during the last six years of insurgency in Bara, she said and added that classes would soon be shifted to its original building after its repair by the political administration.

Ms Zeb also expressed satisfaction over the security provided by the forces and the transportation facility for both teachers and some girl students by the political adminis-tration.

Speaking on the occasion, Political Agent Shahab Ali Shah said that 62 educational institutions, including 37 for girls, out of the total 72 in Akkakhel area had been reopened after the return of over 22,000 displaced families to the area.

He said that administration was focusing on a major reconstruction programme of Bara which included reopening of all educational institutions, health centres, local bazaar, industrial units and provision of drinking water along with restoration of power supply.

`The governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa himself will announce formally reopening of the historic Bara Bazaar after completion of a master plan approved for the bazaar and industrial units,` the official said.
