Teachers threaten agitation against colleague`s killing

Bureau Report 2014-10-14
PESHAWAR: The Government Teachers Alliance (GTA), Karak on Monday warned if the police didn`t arrest the killers of a teacher within two weeks, protest would extend to other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The warning was issued by GTA office-bearers, including GTA Karak chairman Javed Iqbal, Khairul Hawari, Fazal Wahab and Asmatullah, during a news conference here at the Peshawar Press Club.

Javed Iqbal said a teacher of Koh Maiden Primary School, Mohammad Arif, was gunned down in the line of duty on September 16 but the killers were still at large.

He said after the killing, teachers began taking out rallies in Karak to push the government for the arrest of killers but to no avail.

The GTA chairman said teachers demanded early arrest of killers and their trial under the anti-terrorism law, and announcement of compensation for the slain teacher`s family.

Other GTA office-bearers, too, expressed concern over the non-arrest of the teacher`s killers and warned the police of agitation over it.

They also criticised the administration for failing to accept their other demands.

Khairul Hawari insisted the slain teacher didn`t receive death threat from anyone or any organisation.

He said unfortunately, the police had miserably failed to protect public life and property in the district.

`Teachers are fighting illiteracy by educating generation after generation but the administration is not bothered about their security.

`The killing of a teacher is deplorable as such acts spread panic among the entire teaching community. The government should take corrective measures without delay to prevent such violence,` he said.

The GTA office-bearer said if the slain teacher`s killers were not arrested and the teachers` demands were not met by Oct 27, teachers would extend protest to other parts of the province.

He also warned teachers would later protest outside the Peshawar Press Club and boycott classes indefinitely.
