International THAAP conference ends

LAHORE: The three-day 7th International THAAP Conference concluded here on Sunday.

The last day of the conference was well attended by writers, scholars, historians, economists, sociologists, artists, town planners, designers, architects and delegates from Australia, Austria,China,France,Germany, Iran, Nepal, the US, the UK and from various cities of Pakistan.

The sixth session was chaired by Dr Zahra Taraneh Yalda, an architect and city plannerfrom Iran.

The first paper, presented by Prof Pervaiz Vandal, discussed the winning proposal presented in the adAPT NYC competition which was sponsored by the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

The second paper was presented by Mehwish Abid, a published researcher, a practicing architect and an academic.

Her paper titled, `Being and the City` discussed the relationship between phenomenology and being within the context of architecture while highlighting the importance of understandingspiritual context to understand modern era space.

Razia Latif and Prof Dr Gulzar Haider presented the third paper titled, `Remembering Manto: City, Architecture and Fiction`.

Their paper examined the work of Manto and used it as a base for establishing an architectural design project in two unoccupied distinct spaces and making them conducive to reading and storytelling.

The fourth paper was presented by Hafsa Imtiaz, an architect, educationist and urban planner. It was titled, `Public Redefinition of Green Spaces in the New Developments ofLahore`.

The paper aimed at using activity, mapping and photographic survey to understand new developments in Lahore and the available green space from people`s point of view.

The seventh session was chaired by Prof Dr Gulzar Haider, the dean of School of Architecture, Beaconhouse National University.

The fifth paper was presented by Swati Pujari, an architect and an urban manager, on the topic, `Urban Governance Perspective based on Citizen`s Response to Gorakha Earthquake 2015`.

It highlighted the history andevolution of communal and selforganized groups and their role in enhancing as well as assisting the government in taking decisions for the rehabilitation of people af ter the 2015 earthquake.

The sixth paper was presented by Dr Taraneh Yalda. Her paper titled, `Towards People`s Right to Iranian Cities: Rasht and Chabahar` highlighted a history of what these two cities had gone through as empowerment experience (mostly failures) all around the place in Iran, also with a perspective of what could make it a success.

The feedback session was also chaired by Dr Zahra TaranehYalda. Conference sessions were summed up by rapporteur general Sahar Saglain, a practicing interior designer, joint secretary to THAAP.

Later, Prof Pervaiz Vandal, an architect, educationist and THAAP conference convener sharedthefutureplansof THAAP.

Prof Sajida Haider Vandal, educationist, architect and CEO of THAAP, gave the closing remarks of the conference.

The chief guest, Shaista Pervaiz Malik, also addressed the participants.

Certificates were presented to the participants and the volunteers.
