ATC reserves verdict on Sufi`s acquittal plea

PESH AWAR: A local antiterrorism court on Saturday reserved judgment on a plea of Tehreek Nifaz-i-Shariat Mohammadi chief Maulana Sufi Mohammad for acquittal in a police attack case.

Judge Abdur Rauf Khan announced he would announce the verdict on Dec 17. In the case, Sufi Mohammad is charged with inciting around 800 TNSM activists to attack Kabal police station in Swat on June 18, 1995.

The alleged attackers were also booked in the case.

Thecourthadheardthecase inside the Peshawar Central Prison for security reasons.

Sufi Mohammad has been languishing there sincearrest in 2009.

Until now, he and several of his associates have been acquitted by the anti-terrorism court in 10 cases of terrorism. Currently, he faces two cases only, including that of police station attack.

Adil Majeed, lawyer for Sufi Mohammad, said the police didn`t name his client in the police station attack case but he was later charged with the attack.

He said no evidence had surfaced against his client.

The lawyer said none of the prosecution witnesses had deposed against his client and that there was no possibility of his conviction in the case.-Bureau Report
