New York welcome

2015-12-14
NEW YORK: President Ayub Khan arrived in New York yesterday [Dec 12] on the first leg of his crucial visit to Washington. He was accompanied by Foreign Minister Bhutto, Commerce Minister Faruque and some top Pakistani officials. His special PIA flight touched down at the John F.

Kennedy International Airport in dense fog and cold drizzle a few minutes before 3 o`clock in the afternoon (New York time).

President Ayub alighted from the jetliner looking fresh despite the long trans-Atlantic flight, and was received by Pakistan Ambassadors to the United States and United Nations and members of the Pakistan Delegation to the General Assembly which includes three other Ambassadors. The President was loudly cheered by many Pakistanis who turned out at the airport despite the inclement weather.

After a few words with the receiving line, he walked down to the Airport Press room and made the following statement: `I have come to New York to address the General Assembly. I hope there to express my views about some of the more important problems facing the world today and more particularly the situation in our part of the world.` Correspondent [Meanwhile, as reported by our Special Representative in Washington,] a report in the `New York Times` yesterday from James Reston said that `nothing is likely to be achieved until this vicious and inflammatory Press campaign here is changed`. The American reporter was referring to Karachi Press, which he accused of creating a `poisonous atmosphere`.

If there was to be a stop to deterioration of relations between the US and Pakistan the writer suggested that Karachi was the place `where it is probably going to begin`. He also charged that the `Government-controlled Press` in Pakistan showed `a distinct bias in favour of China and in opposition to the United States`. The writer, while bitterly complaining about the conduct of Pakistani Press with regard to the United States, forgot the vicious nature of his own country`s Press comments as far as Pakistan was concerned.
