Outlawed group`s 22 men remanded in judicial custody

MULTAN: An anti-terrorism court on Wednesday remanded 22 activists of a proscribed outfit in judicial custody for 14 days for protesting against the government and security agencies for executing a convict.

The court sent the 22 accused to the Central jail after the Tulamba police registered a case against them. They include Ghulam Shabbir, Muzzamil Shah, Abdul Latif, Abdul Rehman and Alam Tariq. They allegedly protested against the government and secu-rity agencies by offering funeral prayers of Ghulam Shabbir who was hanged on Jan 7 in the Central Jail.

BZU CASE: The Lahore High Court`s Multan Bench on Wednesday held in abeyance the appointment orders of four deputy registrars of the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU).

Shamsher Ali, an administrative officer at the BZU, through his counsel Khurshid Ahmed Khan, filed a petition against the BZU vice chancellor, registrar and others while stating that an advertisement was published on Dec 31, 2012, for the posts of deputy registrar/treasurer/controller examination.He said the candidates having graduation were eligible for the post and it was mentioned in the advertisement that preference would be given to the candidates with high academic attainments combined with a minimum of five years experience.

He said he, being double MA, LLB and B.Ed besides having an experience of 29 years, also applie d for the post. He said the Selection Boardhad decidedin2006thatthe proceedings of appointment for any post would be conducted within one year from the date of advertisement while the syndicate in 2002 had approved rulesfor theshortlisting of the candidates for the posts of assistant and deputy registrar/treasurer/controller of examination.

Instead of following the rules, he said, the university administration constituted a committee of deans to determine eligibility and devise fresh procedure of shortlisting. He said the new criteria was recommended by the committee but not accepted by the VC who constituted another committee on May 5, 2014 whose members were junior to those of the earlier committee.

He said that after the new committee submitted its recommendations, some selected candidateswere called to be appeared in the Selection Board held in September 2014 and Ijaz Ahmed, Muhammad Safdar Abbas Khan, Kamran Tassaduque and Allah Ditta were selected against the posts.

He requested the court to declare the appointments null and void besides issuing directions to the university administration to re-advertise the posts according to statutory provision.

Justice Shoaib Saeed while holding in abeyance the appointment orders directed the university administration to submit the response to the petition within three weel(s.
