`FPSC logic`

2015-05-15
T HIS is apropos the letter `FPSC`s logic` (April 22). Although largely commendable, the recent decision of the FPSC to change the groupings and marks scheme of various subjects is not wholly justified.

Before the recentchanges, history subjects used to carry 200 marks, but now they have been reduced to 100 marks. This may be because FPSC authorities think that history as a subject is not important. Is it so? Understanding the present events and issues requires historical knowledge. As the world is reeling from the turmoil and conflicts from Ukraine to Yemen, the importance of history has only increased as it teaches us that war is futile and ultimately the solution has to be found through negotiations. But history doesn`t only teach us about solutions to conflicts, it also educates us about how to improve the political and economic system of a country.

So, history is as important as science when it comes to improving people`s lives.

Pakistan, the sixth most populated country in the world, is in the eye of the storm as a result of terrorism, sectarianism and ethnic tensions.

One cannot have proper understanding ofthese problems afflicting Pakistan until one knows about their historical background.

Without knowing the history of pressing issues Pakistan is confronted with, their solution can`t be found.

Many times we hear that Pakistanis do not learn from history. How will they if they give history so little importance? The FPSC`s decision to reduce marks of history subjects is sad.
