Team to probe organised power theft

MULTAN: A ministry of water and power team arrived in Multan on Monday to probe into the alleged involvement of Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) officials in an organised electricity thef t.

Sources said the team would probe into the reports of electricity theft in Mepco`s Cantonment sub-division.

A private audit firm has also been hired to audit the sub-division on the direction of Water and Power Secretary Muhammad Younas Dhaga.

A three-member committee constituted by Mepco Chief Executive Officer Masood Salahuddin had identified electricity theft in the sub-division which led to the transfer of Executive Engineer Javed Wains and the suspension of some officials.

Mepco Human Resource and Registration Director Naeemullah said that though the team had arrived but he was not aware of its terms of reference.
