RAWALPINDI: The local administration on Wednesday said the buildings of various educational institutions which were declared `dangerous` should be reconstructed by April 30 and directed the building department to complete the work within the stipulated time.

The deadline was set during a meeting held to review the reconstruction work on dangerous buildings of educational institutions in the district.

Deputy Commissioner Talat Mehmood Gondal said the buildings should be completed as soon as possible so students and teachers feel safe.

`Good quality constructionmaterial should be used and negligence in this regard will not be tolerated,` he said, adding that special teams have been formed to check on the quality of the contractors` work.

`The teams will visit the construction sites to inspect the quality of work and the material being used so that the new buildings will not need to be repaired for many years,` he said.

Contractors will only be paid after obtaining clearance from the team, he added.

The Punjab government has allocated Rs599 million in the current fiscal year for the reconstruction of 178 buildings in the Rawalpindi district which have been declared dangerous and which house educational institutions. The meeting was told the provincial government has released Rs297 which has been transferred to the building department.

The provincial government has frozen the district administration`s accounts two months ago after the start of the new local government system in the province. The building department had then stopped work on the reconstruction of the buildings. The provincial government released the funds after approving the rules for the working of departments under the Punjab Local Government Act 2013.

The slow pace of construction work has led to classed in these schools being held in the open and school buildings in Raja Bazaar and on Murree Road have been pulled down.
