Students told to participate in debates for better future

SWABI: Speakers at the concluding ceremony of a three-day parliamentary debate competition here on Tuesday stressed the need for participation of students in debates and co-curricular activities to help them discover their hidden abilities and to play role in nation-building.

The debate competition was organised by Literary and Debating Society of Ghulam IshaqKhanInstituteof EngineeringSciences and Technology. The contest was attended by university students from across the country.

The speakers said it was an established fact that the best speal(ers were always the best leaders all over the world as they shined in student life while participating in different debate competitions.

If the students wanted to shatter the chains of fear at key juncture of their life they should participate in debate competitions which could help them boost their courage to say and face what was wrong and what was right, they said.

A shy student always remained confused, perturbed and failed to make his/her markon university on college life. The dilemma of such students was that shyness haunted them in practical life as well, resulting in their failure.

In contrast, they said those who took part in debate competitions and other co-curricular activities became bold, courageous and darted shyness to become successful figures in their respective societies.

Walid Bin Khalid and Mueed-ur-Rehman of the University College Lahore won the English contest, defeating Faizan Raja and Hassan Rafigul of FAST University Lahore.

Mohammad Talha Mushtaq and Noor Ejaz Chaudhry of University College Lahore stood first in Urdu contest and Sohail Ahmad and Abdullah of Punjab University were runnerup.

Shields and prizes were given to the winners.

WOMAN KILLED: A woman belonging to Topi city was killed after the motorcycle she was riding along with her son was hit by a car here on Tuesday, said police.

The name of the woman could not be ascertained till filing of this report. Police said the victim`s son was also seriously injured in the accident.
