DCs told to check illegal organ transplant

LAHORE: The deputy commissioners in Punjab were asked on Tuesday to deal with an iron hand those involved in organ transplant, besides ensuring peace and abundant availability of eatables at affordable prices in their jurisdiction during the forthcoming Ramazan.

The direction was given by Chief Secretary Zahid Saeed during a marathon meeting attended by deputy commissioners (DCs) here at the Civil Secretariat.

He asked the DCs to keep a check on illegal human organ transplant and take stern action against those involved in this illegal business. Illegal human organ trade was a stigma on society which must be removed, he said. The district vigilance committees would have to play an active role in ending this illegal practice, he said.

The chief secretary ordered `best arrangements` for Ramazan bazaars as Rs1.4 billion had been released to the districts for the purpose. He sought a strict check on quality of commodities and weights and measures in the Ramazan bazaars. He also ordered the DCs to check hoarding during the month and punish sternly those found indulging in it.

The DCs were asked to regularly visit health facilities to ensure provision of best healthcare to people.

He said 40 hospitals were being revamped. Health councils had been set up at district and tehsil level.

Attractive salary package and other benefits were being given to the doctors serving in far-flung areas so that they could work with dedication and commitment.

He said campaign against dengue and polio should be expedited in vulnerable districts.

Issuing directions to cope with possible floods, the chief secretary asked the officers to personally inspect embankments to check any erosion and be prepared to meet monsoonrelated challenges.
