Security beefed up in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Security of sensitive installations in Peshawar was beefed up after launch of military operation in North Waziristan Agency, official sources said.

They said that security was put on high alert on Khyber Road where several important buildings including the residence of corps commander, provincial assembly, Peshawar High Court and Civil Secretariat were situated.

They said that the situation was under control so far but there was a great pressure on the law enforcement agencies regarding a possible reaction by the militants.

`We have re-enforced police and Frontier Constabulary with fresh directives to ensure checking of suspected people and vehicles to avert any untoward incident,` an official said.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Nasir Khan Durrani has also directed the police officers to remain vigilant in the vulnerable areas of the province, especially in the districts bordering the tribal areas.Presiding over a meting here on Monday, he directed the commandant of Rapid Response Force (RRF) to conduct regular mock exercises and ensure round the clock availability of the contingents in minimal time.

The IGP also ordered comprehensive checking of all IDP camps established in settied areas to prevent the militants from taking refuge there.

He directed the law enforcers to launch a series of incessant search and strike operations across the province with special focus on hostels, hotels and inns.

During the meeting, the IGP was briefed by the Central Police Office and regional police officers about the special steps taken by them for enhanced security in their respective areas.

The IGP was also briefed on the overall security situation in the province and the developments taking place in Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

He was informed that a two-tier security plan for all vulnerable districts was finalised in consultation with the respective political authorities.
