PESHAWAR: The Eleanor Roosevelt Corner was set up in the central library of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University here on Wednesday.

The corner was inaugurated by the vice-chancellor of the university, Dr Razia Sultana, and Christina Tomlinson, the counselor for public affairs at the US Embassy, Islamabad.

Created through a partnership between the US Consulate General in Peshawar and the university, the Eleanor Roosevelt Corner Peshawar is one of 16 American spaces, called Lincoln Corners, located throughout Pakistan.

Since 2005, Lincoln Corners have hosted hundreds of programmes across the country on topics of mutual interest to the United States and Pakistan. The Eleanor Roosevelt Corner, Peshawar is the first to be housed at a women`s university and bears the name of one of America`s most celebrated first ladies.

Dr Razia Sultana called the corner `another success story in a series of shared achievements that the university and the consulate have made for the common cause of strengthening girls` e ducation.

Counselor Tomlinson said that they were so glad to open the Eleanor Roosevelt Corner at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University, which shared America`s dedication to the advancement of women and girls.

The Corner is now open to university students, teachers and their visitors. It will provide information on American history, society and culture. In addition to unique programming, visitors will also have access to hundreds of American books, films and other learning resources.

The US Consulate in Peshawar has previously partnered with the university on the English access programme, the university linkages programme and the American literature reading club.
